This is Can-Am’s peak, where veteran riders who’ve tamed the 78 hp Rotax in the Outlander 850 lineup come for the same excellent capabilities but more power to explore them. Owners get help managing all the power with features like Intelligent Throttle Control, with Standard, Work, and Performance modes, as well as a Standard Key that limits performance and a Performance Key to unlock the full potential. Match that with all-day comfort, huge onboard cargo capacity, excellent towing, and the LinQ accessory system, and the rig they call the “Outty 1000″ is hard to beat.
Each of these runs with the 976cc, 91 hp Rotax V-twin engine. It’s the largest-displacement engine available on any Can-Am ATV. The automatic CVT transmission has been upgraded with three-mode intelligent braking control, so it’s even more of a friend in tricky situations. The transmission includes high and low range and well as park, neutral, and reverse. Select 2WD and 4WD from a bar-mounted rocker switch, and 4WD operation includes Visco-Lok QE automatic locking differential or the rider-lockable Visco-4Lok front differential.
Handling: Steering, Suspension
The 1000R engine makes each of these ATVs the heaviest in their trim. Despite that, Can-Am has done a good job to minimize the large feel of these powerful ATVs with dynamic power steering and intelligent throttle control (ITC). The three-mode throttle control can take the twitchiness out of those 91 horses when set to Standard or Work mode. The Outlander XT is the only one to miss out on Fox suspension components, but the stock units are still pretty good and still include the same 9.2 inches of suspension travel up front and nearly 10 inches at the rear.
Brakes
Braking is handled in the form of dual 214mm front disc brakes with twin-piston hydraulic calipers and a single rear 214mm disc brake with twin-piston hydraulic caliper.
Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
All the seats are about the same. You get a generously padded saddle that narrows toward the front, good for a long day’s ride. Handlebars are high and wide, a good neutral setting that most riders will find comfortable. Each includes mudguards and fender flares as standard. Footwells are large and protective. The Outlander X MR includes wide-body plastics that stretch out further to add extra mud protection. The stitched seat on the X XC can provide a tad more grip for the seat of the pants during fast running.
All but the Outlander X XC come with a 3,500-pound-capacity winch. All include a 5.4-gallon fuel tank and a 5.7-liter rear storage compartment.
Payload/Towing
The Outlander XT and XT-P include both front and rear racks. They can handle 100 pounds and 200 pounds, respectively. The Outlander X XC and X MR do away with the front racks, including only the 200-pound-rated rear rack. Each ATV is rated for 1,650 pounds of towing with the standard rear receiver hitch.
Electronics
The dated, monochrome, 4.5-inch digital display on the Outlander XT 1000R gets the job done, but at these prices it needs to go away. The Outlander X XC, XT-P, and X MR 1000R models get the much nicer 7.6-inch display. Speedometer, tachometer, odometer, trip- and hourmeters, gear position, 4x4 indicator, temperature, engine status lights, electronic fuel gauge, and clock are all present on the rider’s dash cluster.
Ease of Maintenance
The air filter box is accessible without the use of tools. After that, Can-Ams like regular maintenance, but the ATVs make some regular service tasks more time consuming than some other brands. There are plentiful grease zerks, and some owners say brake pads wear quickly no matter how much they spend on pads. Then again, they are slowing the most powerful engine of any ATV. The CVT transmission will require occasional drive belt inspection and replacement.
