The base model is fine for work duty getting around large areas like farms. However, since we have recommended the DPS models that install three-mode power steering and a faster-acting locking differential on the Outlander 450 and 570, it makes even more sense to spend the extra $1,000 here when an 850 weighs 817 pounds. With the full-sizer, the spend also gets 14-inch aluminum wheels instead of the 12-inch cast steel units, and larger Terracross tires that are better than the Carlisle A.C.T. rubber on the base 850.

Step up to the Can-Am Outlander XT to add heavy-duty front and rear bumpers, a 3,500-pound-capacity winch, and hand guards. Boreal Green drops off the color choices, replaced by Platinum Satin. The other two choices are Oxford Blue and Mossy Oak Break-Up Country Camo.

The Hunting Edition is for riders who plan to stalk the wilds and come back home for the grill. It’s got an inch more ground clearance than the trims below, plus mudguards, skid plates, and suspension protectors when the undercarriage eventually does scrape. It goes back to 12-inch cast aluminum wheels, the rims wearing Carlisle A.C.T. HD six-ply radial tires as deterrents against flats. The heated grips and throttle, hand guards, and reinforced seat skin will make stakeouts much more comfortable.

The X MR is all about the mud, putting a snorkel on the V-twin, reworking the CVT intake and outlet, and moving the radiator. Gas shocks suspend the 14-inch wheels mounted with 30-inch ITP Cryptid tires instead of the oil-filled dampers of models below. The front diff is upgraded to the Visco-4Lok, which lets the rider fully lock and unlock the front differential on demand. And mudguards plus footrests designed for evacuating sludge will do their best to keep all the earth from going home with you. Up high, the cockpit comes with a larger, 7.6-inch digital display. This one’s 39 pounds lighter than the 2022 model, another boon to getting out of the suck.

The XT-P puts matters back on the trail, but it wants rough stuff too. It’s fitted with the Visco-4Lok, its other enhancements including Fox 1.5 Podium QS3 adjustable shocks, and 14-inch beadlock wheels wearing ITP Terracross tires. The XT-P also includes sport-inspired fat-style tapered handlebars for more leverage through corners and full-wrap hand guards. It’s $1,700 above the XT, worth it for a machine you can ride from the dealer floor into the deep wilds.
